SAN PEDRO DE RIOBAMBA

Riobamba, the capital of the Chimborazo Province, is well known for the mountains that surround this charming city and is locally known as “Sultan of the Andes”.  Riobamba offer to its visitors a colonial architecture, cobble-stone streets, traditional markets, ancient buildings and fascinating plazas. If you are looking for authentic Ecuadorian handicrafts, Riobamba is the right place. There is a small artisan market denominated “Plaza Roja” where people exhibit traditional clothes and artisan crafts. Also 15 minutes from Riobamba is located Guano, which is internationally known for its leather factories.

Riobamba is the nearest city to Chimborazo Volcano, Ecuador’s highest mountain at just about 6310 m. Climbs leave at about 10 pm in order to summit at sunrise and make the descent by late morning. A round trip should take about 9-10 hours.

Other Riobamba’s most attractive activities for visitors, this train ride through the mountains allows passengers to ride on the roof of the train. One of the most appealing things about the train is that during the four or five hour journey, it goes through every climate zone in continental Ecuador: starting in the Andean highlands, passing through the cloud forest, and arriving in the jungle-climate on the coast, in Alausi. The train usually departs three days a week.

Urban buses cots 30 cents. Taxis are plentiful; and the minimum price is $ 1.20
